Geothermal heating and cooling from a buried loop

Heat and cool your house from the earth's steady temperature, installed by R.A. Heating & Air Conditioning in Evansville, with rebate paperwork help.

A loop in the ground and a steady temperature

Inside the earth, temperatures stay relatively constant through the year, and a geothermal system taps into that. R.A. Heating & Air Conditioning installs systems that run fluid through a loop buried underground. In winter they warm your house from that steady source, and in summer they dispel heat from your home.

The fluid in the loop carries the ground's temperature to the house. Inside, it circulates through water-to-refrigerant and refrigerant-to-air heat exchangers, where those fluid temperatures are converted into hot or cool air for your rooms. It is a different machine from the condenser that sits beside most houses.

What the system gives back, in R.A.'s own list

R.A. lists several benefits for geothermal heating and cooling. These systems use 25 to 50 percent less energy than conventional systems, by the company's account, and they maintain a relative humidity level of about 50 percent inside your home. Those are R.A.'s published figures, so ask the crew how they apply to your house and the way it is built.

Zoning is built in, so different temperatures can be held in different parts of your home. The system is quiet: a two-speed unit that needs no outside compressor and uses fewer moving parts, which R.A. describes as discreet. Because the components are set up inside the home, they are not open to random vandalism or tampering.

New construction, remodels and the paperwork

Geothermal can be installed during new construction or as part of a remodeling project, which makes timing a real question. A new build lets the loop, the heat exchangers and the rest of the HVAC design be planned together before the walls close. A remodel can take the same system; the plan just has to fit the house that is already standing.

R.A. will help with energy and tax rebate paperwork, and the rebates page explains where to begin. “I’ve had R.A. at my home 2 different times. Both times they came promptly. They were professional, courteous, and didn't overcharge me. First time they came was during a heat wave and second time was right after the holidays. They came when they said they would, and had the parts. I have no complaints. I would suggest these guys to anyone.”
